Over the past 5 years of watching the weather the last week or 2 of October is always a time I look forward to. It seems every year this time period often has severe storms or at least very photogenic storms. Heres a list I just put together:
2005
October 24 - Servere storms affect Port Maquarie, Nambucca and the Coffs coast all the way up to yamba.
Ocober 25 - 2 supercells explode off shore of Coffs Harbour and Woolgoolga at sunset. Lightning storms affect the Norther Rivers.
October 27 - Hail storms up to golf ball size hammer Woolgoolga, Nymboida, West Coffs and Mclean. Severe storms occur around the Casino area.
2006
Storms affect the Northern Tablelands.
2007
Ocotber 26 - A supercell hammers Bellingen with golfball hail. Another supercell produces the Dunoon tornado near Lismore.
Ocotober 31 - Supercell and severe storms affect Dorrigo, Grafton, Mclean and Tabulam.
2008
October 21 - A supercell with 7cm hail stones strike Woolgoolga. Other storms affect Mclean and Byron Bay.
October 22 - A severe hail storm hits Byron Bay.
2009
October 25 - severe storms on the Northern Tablelands and off shore of Nambucca.
This leads me to 2010. Today is the 20'th of October and I have been looking at the gfs model runs for the last few days. Itis still early to predict but it seems the last week of October will again feature severe storms in the Mid North Coast and the Northern Rivers. Wide spread instability is predicted over multiple days beggining this Sunday. As to which days are best is still open but I'm keen to chase every day possible this time. I missed the Bellingen supercell of 2007 doing a driving test and the Wollgoolga hail storm of 2008 due to social commitments. The years prior these I had no vehical. Needless to say this year I want to have some success!
So either way I'm confident of some photogenic storms over the next 2 weeks. If you are interested in photograpging storms in this area then I would check the radar every afternoon from this weekend on and head out to some lookouts. Goodluck
